PEFC is a global umbrella organisation for the assessment of and mutual recognition of national forest certification schemes developed in a multi-stakeholder process. These national schemes build upon the inter-governmental processes for the promotion of sustainable forest management, a series of on-going mechanisms supported by 149 governments in the world covering 85% of the world’s forest PEFC™ has nine stakeholder groups who form a decision-making committee. None of these groups can independently adopt or reject a decision, neither internationally, nor country-specific. From an international point of view, the groups are composed of various stakeholders, including nature and environmental organisations, indigenous peoples, industry associations and trade unions. PEFC, the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, is the world’s leading forest certification system.

This standard covers the requirements for users of the PEFC trademarks (including both the PEFC logo and initials) to ensure their accurate, verifiable, relevant and non-misleading usage. The PEFC General Assembly approved the revised standard on 17 January 2020. The PEFC National Governing Bodies (PEFC NGB) are independent, national organisations established to develop and implement a PEFC system within their country. A list of the PEFC NGBs and their contact details can be found at the PEFC website. PEFC NGBs are often also the “PEFC authorised body”.
